How futures backtesting works

Jump to session menu with the Asian, European and US opens Step 1

Pick a contract and a date.

Choose a future, a date range and a starting balance. The replay starts at your date with the bars before it on the chart, and nothing after it shows until you press Play.

  • NQ, ES, YM, RTY and the micros
  • Jump to the New York open (Premium)
  • Any timeframe from 1 minute up
New trade window with a stop loss and two take profits Step 2

Trade it in contracts.

Size every position in contracts, with the micros for small accounts. Prices move in the futures tick, and commission is charged per contract on the way in and on the way out.

  • Market and limit orders
  • Stops and several targets
  • Commission per contract
Session stats with the equity curve and profit metrics Step 3

Then read the result.

Your equity curve, win rate, profit factor and drawdown are there for every session, with a score out of 10 for each trade. Run the same rules again on another month and compare.

  • Stats for every session
  • Trade scores and tips
  • Save and continue later

How our futures data works

Our futures are built from CFD prices, not exchange data, and adjusted to trade like the real contract: the futures premium over the index, futures trading hours, the futures tick size and the same contract rolls. We checked them against real futures.

99.9% price match

NQ is usually within a few points of the real contract.

97% same candles

97% of 5-minute candles close in the same direction.

Futures hours and ticks

The 5 PM New York break, the contract tick size and the same rolls.

Volume is different

It shows CFD activity, not exchange contracts, so volume profile can look different.

Futures backtesting questions

Is this real CME futures data?

No. Our futures are built from CFD prices and adjusted to trade like the real contract: futures premium, trading hours, tick size and rolls. They match real futures prices 99.9% of the time, and 97% of 5-minute candles close in the same direction. Volume differs, because it is CFD activity.

Which futures can I backtest?

NQ, MNQ, ES, MES, YM, RTY, gold (GC and MGC), crude oil (CL) and Euro FX (6E).

How far back does the futures data go?

NQ, ES, YM and their micros from 2018, RTY from 2020, gold from 2007, crude oil from 2016 and Euro FX from 2004, all as 1-minute data.

Can I backtest micro futures like MNQ and MES?

Yes. MNQ, MES and Micro Gold are in the list, and positions are sized in contracts, so a small account can practice with micros.

Can I practice a Topstep or Apex evaluation?

Yes. Choose Prop Firm Challenge when you start a session and pick the firm. Its profit target, daily loss limit and trailing drawdown are tracked as you trade, on the firm's own trading day, and the run ends in a pass or fail.

Is futures backtesting free?

Futures are on Premium. The free plan covers forex and metals, and prop firm challenge mode is free on those. Pro adds 1-second data on nine of the futures.
